By Chelsea Aubin Why not start walking your weight off? The utmost battle for any working mother is the obstruction of having time in their day to exercise. For stay-at-home mom it can be even extra tricky because children will regularly go along with the adventure which means a plethora of distractions. One of the most effective forms of exercise is walking which is also an easy exercise program to start with because you are able to set your own goals and limitations as you get on with your new fitness exploit. People might try to persuade you to join your local gym, walking for exercise allows you the capability and flexibility to exercise anywhere and anytime you want. Even though an open schedule is good, when you are starting out it is important to schedule your walks. Pick out a set schedule for 3 weeks and write it on your calendar and plan everything else around your walking schedule. The reason is you will find it easy to break exercise commitments because you put someone else’s needs before your own. For 3 weeks, put your overall health and well being first. Start slow. It is also a good idea to start with two 10 minute brisk walks before plummeting into a full twenty minute power-walk. Unless you are extremely overweight and or have health problems, you should be able to start your walking program with the two daily exercise sessions and do these 5 days a week. I highly recommend you take a couple days off a week so you do not get burnt out. Start your walking program on a Monday. If you really want to improve your health then also change your eating and sleeping habits too. By eating right and getting a good nights rest every night you will see dramatic improvements in not only your health but also your overall feeling. You can accomplish so much more if you are maintaining a healthy lifestyle while taking on a life-changing and possibly life-saving walking program. How To Win Your Social Security Case-Disability Benefits If You Suffer From Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

By Sheri Abrams Winning a Social Security Disability case for someone who suffers from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and/or Fibromyalgia (CFS/FMS) can be very difficult. However, with proper preparation I am often able to win client’s their Social Security Disability benefits. I approach a Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or Fibromyalgia case using the following five factors: 1) Was the Diagnosis of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or Fibromyalgia Made by a Specialist? I am always very skeptical on my chances of winning when a person comes to me and is not being treated by a specialist in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and/or Fibromyalgia. I usually prefer to see that the client is being treated by a Rheumatologist but I have been successful in these type of cases working with an Infectious Disease Specialist and a Neurologist. I feel that the diagnosis of a primary care or internist is not sufficient in this type of case. It is also important, of course, for this doctor to be supportive of his/her patients disability case and for me and the client to know this from the beginning of my representation. If a person calls me and does not have a specialist working with him/her, I suggest that they contact a local support group for a referral. 2) Has the Clients Doctor Eliminated Other Diseases Through Testing Before Diagnosing Him/Her with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and/or Fibromyalgia? I feel that to provide validity to the diagnosis of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and/or Fibromyalgia certain medical tests need to be performed so as to rule out other conditions. I usually like to see blood work done that excludes other Rheumatic diseases which may share symptoms with, or mimic, CFS/FMS. In cases of Fibromyalgia I look for a physical exam that finds and documents tender points. In Chronic Fatigue Syndrome cases I also normally like to see that a Tilt Table Test has been done. 3) Are the Clients Complaints Typical For Someone Who Suffers With Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and/or Fibromyalgia? By now I can usually tell by interviewing a prospective client if his/her complaints are typical. The clients medical records should show documented symptoms. Without this documentation, the diagnoses of CFS/FMS may be subject to disbelief by Social Security. 4) Was the Client Treated With Physical Therapy and/or Pain Medication? I like to show an Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) that my client has tried whatever treatment is available for his/her condition. Whether this is a series of physical therapy appointments, narcotic pain medications or even non-traditional treatments like biofeedback or acupuncture. I feel that the severity of my clients condition will be supported by the fact that he/she has tried everything to find relief. 5) Has the Client Consulted or Been Treated by a Psychiatrist or Therapist? Because I do not want an ALJ to attempt to say that Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or Fibromyalgia are “mental disorders” I like to show the ALJ that my client is either seeking treatment for depression or anxiety or has had these conditions ruled out by a mental health specialist and are still suffering from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and/or Fibromyalgia. Adoptees Need Support When Voicing Feelings about Birth Parents

By Kathy Holmes “I feel like a mistake.” “I’m not like them.” “Where’s my family?” “Why can’t I find a suitable career?” “Why do I keep dating the wrong people?” These are just a few of the thoughts adoptees voice, if you listen to them carefully. While adopted parents want to believe that they’re the real parents of an adopted child, the truth is they are not the real biological parents. And no matter how loving a home they have provided their adopted child, the child has real psychological needs just like everybody else. And when an adopted child speaks up, voicing their feelings about their need to know their birth parents, the automatic response of adoptive parents is often one of hurt, confusion, and protest. “Why, we love you just like our own” is the common response and while many adopted parents feel this is the most loving thing they could say, it’s actually hurtful. Why? Adopted children need to express their need to know their biological parents. Not knowing where they come from affects their whole life: who they are, who they might become, who they choose to have relationships with, and what choice or lack of choice they make for a career. It affects all of their life choices, and denying this real psychological need only makes things worse. It’s far worse to deny your feelings than it is to admit to truth. Admitting to truth may not change things outwardly, but it does give a person a sense of authenticity that affects everything in their life. If their feelings are repressed or criticized, they may feel that something is wrong with them. Because the truth is, the truth, or what they believe inside themselves is what drives their life and influences every decision they make. Feeling like a mistake is one of the most detrimental subconscious feeling there is. If you believe that you are a mistake, you will turn on yourself and it will show in your life. You won’t believe you deserve the best for yourself and you will make decisions accordingly. Eventually, you may have unhealthy relationships, more prone to physical addictions (such as food, drink, drug, or sex abuse), and an unfulfilled life at the very least. If you haven’t experienced this yourself or know somebody who has, you may not be as tuned in to this issue. But to anyone who does have up-close experience, the signs are quite clear. And while I wasn’t adopted, I didn’t know my biological father growing up, and I noticied I had similar symptoms as those who are adopted. I first became aware of my own repressed feelings to find my father when the Oregonian published an article about the new open adoption policy and the resulting controversy. Birth moms felt betrayed because they had been reassured nobody would ever know about the child they gave up for adoption. Adoptees were ecstatic because finally the records would be open and they would be given their first clues as to the identity of their birth moms, and to their identity. I, too, had little information to go on about my biological father. I later found and met my father and that’s when I started writing about my experience, hoping to share it with others, and to raise an awareness about this topic and the emotional needs involved. What we mustn’t forget is that the most important person in any adoption is the child. We need to know that going in. It’s not about our need to have a child and to be fulfilled. It’s about caring for a growing human being. And in addition to offering our love and physical care of the child, we also need to make a commitment to support them in their quest to find their birth parents, and, consequently, to find themselves. Because if we really love them, we won’t deny their need to find an important piece of the puzzle about their identity, the decisions they make, and their entire future. And having a loving relationship with them includes a willingness to be open, honest, and authentic. That’s what real love is. Chicken Soup for the Soil

By Jean Fritz Keeping Your Soil Healthy Your soil is the most important part of your garden, but too many people forget to nurture their soil. Soil is a living thing, containing microbes, fungi, insect life and general “creepy-crawlies” vital to plant health and vigor, as well as a receptacle for chemicals and trace elements. Doing a little soil prep every fall pays off each and every harvest. First, add more organic matter. Use your rototiller or your spade, and dig under frostbitten plant material, grass clippings, leaves, wood chips, and compost. Avoid using any diseased plant material as compost burn it first if there are no local restrictions on burning. If you live near any livestock, cover your garden with 1 2 of uncomposted manure, then disguise that with other organic materials, and let the whole thing winter over. A blanket of snow from December through March will turn all of it into about of the most beautiful topsoil you can imagine. Its also time to think about soil pH, or the acidity or alkalinity. The addition of organic materials can lower the pH, or make it more acidic. If your soil is already high in acid and youd like to neutralize it, you can also add lime or wood ashes to your garden. Wood ashes are wickedly alkaline, but after a season or two, create an excellent haven for earthworms and add enough potash to the soil to grow wonderful root crops. Finally, feed your fungi. Really. Many stores specializing in products for organic gardening and sustainable agriculture sell micorrhizal spores, which is a fungus that helps soil release its nutrients more easily. Micorrhiza needs to be fed in order to reproduce and survive the winter. Use a hose-end sprayer, and fill it halfway with gooey, blackstrap molasses. If you can find the sulphured kind, so much the better. Fill the rest of the sprayer with flat beer, and spray the solution over your garden beds. The sugar in the molasses feeds the existing fungi and beneficial bacteria in the soil, and the yeasts and enzymes in the beer add more.
